Interns at Dhaka's Mitford Hospital are on strike demanding personal security. Students of Sir Salimullah Medical College have also boycotted classes on the same demand.

The hospital's interns' organization, the Intern Doctors Society (IDS), has announced a one-day strike on Sunday. Students of Sir Salimullah Medical College are on strike in solidarity with the strike.

Interns doctor and Students of Sir Salimullah Medical College alleged that their campus is a campus where no one understands who is an outsider or a student. A lot of outsiders come and roam here. The campus security system is lacking. They went to the Principal of the institution on Saturday. But they did not get any assurance. That is why they are boycotting classes. And the intern doctors are also going on strike.

Intern doctors and students have made some demands. That are -- extortionists and outsiders in the Mitford area should be identified and action should be taken. Adequate security should be ensured on the campus. The administration should provide a permanent solution plan. Arrangements should be made to set up police boxes as soon as possible to provide security to students and doctors. Adequate CCTV cameras should be installed in the campus area.

They also said that they came here to be doctors, not to live in fear. They don't understand why the administration is silent despite repeated requests.

Sir Salimullah Medical College Vice-Principal Dr Md Jakir Hossain told The Daily Observer that none of the students came to the class on Sunday. They have boycotted classes. So far I know they have gone on a one-day strike.

About the security, they have spoken to the law enforcement agencies regarding their demands. They have said that they will take all necessary measures to ensure security. We hope that everything will return to normal from Monday, he said. Last Wednesday, a businessman named Lal Chand alias Sohag was publicly beaten and banged stoned to death in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital. The 32-year-old Sohag was a trader in the Mitford area.

After the video of the brutal incident went viral, there has been outrage across the country. Various organizations are holding programmes in different places demanding punishment of the culprits.
