Akhtar Hossain appointed BB's chief economist

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) has appointed Dr Mohammad Akhtar Hossain as its chief economist.

His contractual appointment came into effect from July 1, which will continue for two years until June 30, 2027, said an office order of the central bank on Monday, says a press release. 

Akhtar's employment will be governed by the terms and conditions specified in the contract signed with the Bangladesh Bank on July 1, it added.

Mohammad Akhtar Hossain, completed undergraduate studies at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, where he earned the B.Sc. (Honours) (1978) and M.Sc. degrees (1980)in Economics.

He achieved First Class and ranked first place in both degrees.

Dr Hossain joined the Department of Economics at Jahangirnagar University as Lecturer and worked here about a year between 1981-1982.

With the support of postgraduate scholarships from both the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University, he later earned M.A.(Honours) (1984) and PhD degrees (1989) in Economics from the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University respectively in Melbourne, Australia. 

Having gained PhD degree in Economics. Dr Hossain joined the University of Newcastle in 1989 as Associate Lecturer in the Department of Economics and continued to work at this university for about 30years.

He took early retirement from this university as Associate Professor of Economicsin2020. 

In 2024, he joined United International University as Professor of Economics. He has taken leave from this university to take up the position of Chief Economist, Bangladesh Bank as of1 July, 2025.
