PR system backers plotting against elections: Tuku

BNP Central Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has alleged that those supporting the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system are engaged in a conspiracy against the country’s democratic process.

Speaking at a scholarship and awards ceremony in Tangail on Friday afternoon, Tuku stated, “The people of this country demand their voting rights.

The BNP has long struggled to ensure that right. In a democracy, it is the people who are the true owners of the state, and their representatives must be elected through direct votes.”

The event, held at the premises of the Tangail District Shilpakala Academy, honored high-achieving SSC and equivalent exam students from Tangail Sadar Upazila who earned GPA-5. Scholarships and honorary crests were distributed to recognize their academic excellence.

Tuku further stated that if elected to power through a democratic vote, the BNP plans to introduce a Family Card system for every household in the country. “Each card will be registered under the mother’s name, and she will receive monthly financial assistance through it. This initiative aims to recognize and empower mothers as the core of the family,” he said.

He emphasized that the future of Bangladesh lies in democracy. “The people will decide who governs this country. The previous government fostered teen gangs and deployed them across the country. Today’s teenagers are the future of our nation. We will take firm action to ensure they are no longer manipulated or misled.”

Among others, Professor Dr. Mohammad Zulfikar Ali, Chairman, Department of Business Administration, Presidency University, Mahmudul Haque Shanu, Former Member Secretary, Tangail District BNP, Shafiqul Rahman Khan Shafik, Former Organizing Secretary, Khandaker Rashedul Alam Rashed, Convener, Tangail District Jubo Dal, and Durjoy Shuvo, Convener, Tangail District Chhatra Dal were present on the occasion.
