Sales of savings certificates in Khulna remained largely stable in the 2024-25 fiscal year despite fluctuations in interest rates, with a total of 5,614 certificates worth Tk 338.03 crore sold, according to the Bangladesh Bank’s Khulna branch.

The figure shows only a slight decrease from the previous fiscal year (2023-24), when 5,550 certificates worth Tk 338.72 crore were sold.

In FY 2024-25, the highest number of purchases came from five-year family savings certificates, with 3,022 investors investing Tk 155.01 crore. Three-monthly profit-bearing certificates attracted 1,931 investors and brought in Tk 109.84 crore. Meanwhile, 422 pensioners purchased five-year pensioners' savings certificates worth Tk 59.64 crore, and 239 investors acquired Bangladesh savings certificates valued at Tk 13.54 crore, BSS reports.

This compares to the previous fiscal year’s figures: 2,798 investors purchased family savings certificates worth Tk 144.27 crore, 2,021 investors bought three-monthly profit-bearing certificates totaling Tk 121.75 crore, 825 investors invested Tk 55.23 crore in pensioners’ certificates, and 306 investors bought Bangladesh savings certificates worth Tk 17.47 crore.

Interest rate changes throughout FY 2024-25 were driven by efforts to manage inflation. From January to June 2025, the interim government raised savings certificate rates up to 12.55 percent to support fixed-income groups amid rising living costs. However, from July 1, the rates were revised downward, with the highest rate capped at 11.82 percent—a reduction of 0.73 percentage points.

Md Muntasir Mamun, Joint Director and focal person of Bangladesh Bank in Khulna, said the new rate structure introduced on January 1, 2025, is now tied to the government’s treasury bond rates. He added that despite rate adjustments, savings certificates remain popular among women, retirees, and the elderly due to their security and reliable returns.
