The High Court on Thursday acquitted controversial businessman SM Golam Kibria Shamim, widely known as GK Shamim, from 10-year jail term in a money laundering case.
An HC bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin pronounced the judgment.
On July 17, 2023, Dhaka Special Judge Mohammad Nazrul Islam had sentenced Shamim to 10 years in prison in the case.
Seven associates of Shamim-- bodyguards Md Delwar Hossain, Md Morad Hossain, Md Zahidul Islam, Md Shahidul Islam, Md Kamal Hossain, Md Samsad Hossain, and Md Anisul Islam-- were sentenced to four years in prison each in the case.
Shamim was arrested on September 20, 2019, by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from his residence in Niketan. During the operation, authorities seized eight firearms, Tk 1.81 crore in cash, large amounts of foreign currency, liquor, and Fixed Deposit Receipts (FDRs) totaling Tk 165 crore. A money laundering case was filed against him the following day by RAB official Subedar Mizanur Rahman, accusing Shamim of laundering approximately Tk 168 crore through FDRs.
