BNP in command; Jamaat rebuilds base; NCP, IAB hustle for space in Bogura

BOGURA, a traditional stronghold of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has become a centre of political activity ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary elections. All seven constituencies in the district have seen a flurry of interest from potential candidates, particularly from BNP.

While political activities are mostly confined to quiet courtyard meetings and ward-level gatherings, the nomination race is heating up across all major parties. The final nature of the election-especially the voting method-remains undecided and is expected to significantly impact campaign strategies.

Bogura District comprises 12 upazilas and encompasses seven parliamentary constituencies. The district is widely considered a BNP bastion, largely due to its association with former President Ziaur Rahman, whose ancestral home is located here-preserving the party's enduring popularity.

Jamaat-e-Islami also maintains a significant presence in Bogura. The party has succeeded in electing Members of Parliament (MPs) from different constituencies over the years. In 1970, the then District Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdur Rahman Fakir won a seat, and since then, Jamaat has remained a fierce competitor in all constituencies in the district.

The Bogura-1 seat remained under BNP control until 2006. However, from 2008 onward, it shifted to Awami League (AL), with Abdul Mannan, the late former organizing secretary of the party, winning the seat in that election.

This time, BNP is seeing a surge of nomination seekers. However, senior leaders of the District BNP are reluctant to disclose names of potential candidates. The fate of BNP's nominations in all seven constituencies of Bogura is largely dependent on the decision of the party's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

District BNP President Rezaul Karim Badsha stated that the party will follow whatever decision Tarique Rahman makes. When asked about probable candidates, he declined to share any names, explaining that each seat has 7 to 10 aspirants.

He also criticised the push for the Proportional Representation (PR) system, saying, "BNP does not agree with those who advocate for the PR. The general public doesn't even understand what PR is. How can we talk about such a system when the voters themselves are unaware of how it works?"

Meanwhile, the District BNP continues its social activities; particularly through a platform called "Amra BNP Paribar" ("We Are BNP Family"). Under this banner, the party's member-secretary has been providing financial aid to underprivileged and July movement veterans, along with engaging in various social welfare initiatives.

In terms of seat-sharing, Badsha acknowledged that if an understanding is reached with any ally party, one seat may need to be relinquished. However, any such decision will be taken at the party's top level.

The District Jamaat-e-Islami has finalised its candidates for all seven seats. They are continuing their election campaign, providing financial aid to the poor and assistance to the "July Warriors," and keeping in touch with their families. They are also holding meetings in upazilas, unions, and wards.

Abdullah Taki, Joint Convenor of District National Citizen Party (NCP), said that the party might field candidates in three seats. Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) has finalised candidates for five out of Bogura's seven seats.

BOGURA 1: This parliamentary seat consists of Sariakandi and Sonatala upazilas.

The constituency was a BNP stronghold until 2006. However, after 2008, the seat went to the AL. In the 2008 election, the late Abdul Mannan, former organizing secretary of the party, won.

Many potential candidates for the Bogura-1 seat have already started campaigning. For this seat, BNP nomination hopefuls include: A.K.M. Ahsanul Tayyab Zakir, District BNP Vice-President; Alhaj Kazi Rafiqul Islam, BNP Central Executive Member and former MP; Dr. Shah Md. Shahjahan Ali, President of the District DAB (Doctors' Association of Bangladesh); Touhidur Rahman Titua, central leader of Shechchasebak Dal; and one person named ATM Shahidullah, Sariakandi Upazila Committee member, will also seek nomination from the BNP.

Jamaat's declared candidate for the seat is Princiapal Shahabuddin, a member of the Central Executive Council. Meanwhile, IAB has finalised Dr. A.B.M. Mostafa Kamal Pasha, President of the organization's Sonatala Upazila Committee, as its candidate.

BOGURA-2:  The constituency encompasses Shibganj Upazila.

In this seat, BNP contenders include Mir Shahe Alam, the local upazila BNP President, and Firoz Mahmud Iqbal, former assignment officer to Begum Khaleda Zia. There is also speculation that Mahmudur Rahman Manna, a former DUCSU VP and GS and the leader of Nagorik Oikya, may contest this seat under the BNP's 'Paddy Sheaf ' symbol.

Jamaat's declared candidate for this seat is former Shibganj Upazila Ameer Principal Shahadatuzzaman, while IAB has nominated Advocate Jamal Uddin, a member of the party's Central Legal Council.

BOGURA-3: This constituency incorporates Adamdighi and Dupchanchia upazilas.

The seat has also seen several prominent BNP figures expressing interest. These include Advocate Hamidul Haque, District BNP Vice-President; Fazlul Bari Talukdar, former general secretary (GS) of the District BNP; Abdul Muhit Talukdar, son of former MP Majid Talukdar; Mofazzal Hossain, President of Santahar Municipal BNP; Firoz Md. Kamrul Hossain, former president of Adamdighi Municipal BNP; Ataur Rahman Mukta, President of Bogura City BNP; and Lion Farid Uddin Ahmed, Joint Convenor of the Central Sramik Dal; Tofazzal Hossain Bhutta, President of Santahar Municipal BNP;  and Abdul Mannan, District Expatriate Welfare Affairs Secretary of BNP.

The Jamaat has named Nur Mohammad Abu Taher, Managing Director of Guardian Publications, as its candidate for this seat.

BOGURA-4: The constituency incorporates Kahaloo and Nandigram upazilas.

In this seat, BNP has two known hopefuls- District GS Mosharraf Hossain and former GS of Jatiotabadi Ulama Dal Fazle Rabbi Toha.

Jamaat has declared Dr. Mostafa Faisal Parvez, Secretary General of International Islamic Federation of Student Organizations as its candidate, while IAB has selected Assistant Professor Maulana Idris Ali, who serves as District President of Bangladesh Mujahid Party.

BOGURA-5: The constituency encompasses Dhunat and Sherpur upazilas.

In this seat, A.K.M. Touhidul Alam, President of Dhunat BNP, and Golam Mohammad Siraj, a former district BNP president and former MP, are the main BNP hopefuls.

Jamaat-e-Islami has declared Alhaj Dabibur Rahman, Sherpur Upazila Ameer, as its candidate.

From the NCP, Mosharraf Hossain, Central Member Secretary of the party's Labour Wing, has been finalised as its candidate.

BOGURA 6: The constituency includes Bogura Sadar Upazila.

According to multiple party sources, BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman himself may contest from this seat, though final decisions will depend on his personal preference.

Jamaat's declared candidate here is Abidur Rahman Sohail, Bogura City Jamaat Ameer, while Rafia Rabbi, NCP's District Joint Coordinator, will contest from the same seat. IAB has finalised District President A.N.M. Mamunur Rashid for this constituency.

BOGURA -7: The constituency encompasses Gabtali and Shajahanpur upazilas.

Former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is expected to run in this seat.

Jamaat has declared Golam Rabbani, Central Vice-President of Labour Welfare Federation, as its candidate.

NCP has nominated Sakib Mahadi, its Central Joint Organizer, while IAB has finalised District GS Shafiqul Islam Shafi as its candidate.

As Bogura prepares for another high-stakes election, all eyes remain fixed on the decisions of BNP's central leadership-particularly Tarique Rahman-who will determine not only the fate of local aspirants but perhaps the broader strategy of the party in this critical district.
