A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed former acting mayor of Gazipur City Corporation Asadur Rahman Kiran on a three-day remand in a case filed over attempted murder of businessman Ishtiaq Mahmud.

In the same case, the court also granted a petition to show former Dhaka North mayor Atiqul Islam as arrested.

Additionally, former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak was arrested in a separate murder case filed with Mohammadpur police.

Metropolitan Magistrate M Mizbah Ur Rahman issued these orders after arguments from both prosecution and defence.

According to the case details, on July 18 last year, during the anti-discrimination student movement, a group including the accused allegedly attacked demonstrators with weapons, firing shots that critically injured businessman Ishtiaq Mahmud. He later filed a case with Uttara East Police Station on October 29.

Kiran was detained by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in November 2024 while attempting to flee to India and has since been in jail. Atiqul was arrested in October 2024 in separate murder cases and remains behind bars.

In Palak’s case, police said he was linked to the fatal shooting of truck driver Md Hossain on July 19 last year in Mohammadpur. Hossain’s mother later filed a murder case over the incident.
