MEHERPUR, a modest district in the south-western corner of Bangladesh, holds an outsized significance in the nation's history, culture, and political life. Despite its relatively small geographic footprint, Meherpur has left an indelible mark on the country's journey to independence and continues to play an active role in shaping contemporary political narratives. From its rich historical legacy to its vibrant agricultural and cultural landscape, the district is a microcosm of Bangladesh's enduring spirit.

Situated in the Khulna Division, Meherpur shares borders with Kushtia to the east, Chuadanga to the north, and India to the west and south. Its strategic location has historically made it a hub of cross-border trade, cultural exchange, and political activity. The district is interlaced with rivers and canals, including the Bhairab and Kumar, which serve multiple purposes.

They provide irrigation for its fertile lands, sustain local fisheries, and facilitate transportation, thereby enhancing both the economy and the everyday life of the residents. Agriculture remains the backbone of Meherpur's economy, with rice, jute, sugarcane, and vegetables forming the primary crops. Local markets bustle with activity, reflecting the district's vibrant rural economy.

Meherpur occupies a unique place in Bangladesh's historical consciousness as the site of the country's first provisional government during the Liberation War of 1971. On April 17, 1971, in the area then known as Baidyanathtala (later renamed Mujibnagar), the historic Provisional Government-commonly referred to as the Mujibnagar Government-was officially formed. This marked the formal launch of Bangladesh's struggle for independence and provided vital organizational and moral support to freedom fighters across the country.

Today, Mujibnagar stands as a landmark of national pride. The Mujibnagar Memorial Complex attracts historians, students, and patriotic citizens who come to pay homage to the leaders and martyrs who shaped the country's destiny. Annual commemorations are held, and educational programmes frequently use the site to teach the younger generations about the sacrifices and courage that laid the foundation of Bangladesh.

Meherpur is represented by two parliamentary constituencies: Meherpur-1 comprising Meherpur Sadar and Mujibnagar Upazilas, and Meherpur-2 covering Gangni Upazila. In both constituencies, political activities have intensified in anticipation of upcoming election.

Prospective candidates are employing a range of strategies to connect with voters, including processions, rallies, and mass communication campaigns. Discussions in local tea stalls-colloquially known as the "mini parliaments"-fields, and river ghats reveal the electorate's keen interest in who will secure party nominations.

Currently, at least eight aspirants are vying for nominations from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) across both seats. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) have announced single candidates for each constituency.

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has also fielded a candidate in one of the seats. After years of constrained voting opportunities, residents are eagerly preparing to exercise their franchise, with political debates and public discussions reflecting high voter engagement.

MEHERPUR-1: This constituency encompasses Meherpur Sadar and Mujibnagar upazilas.
The seat has a total of 313,134 registered voters.

The BNP candidates seeking nomination include prominent figures such as Masud Arun, a former Member of Parliament (MP) and Central Executive Committee member; Advocate Kamrul Hasan, the District BNP General Secretary; Zakir Hossain, General Secretary of Bangladesh Teachers' Association and District BNP member; Amirul Islam, President of Mujibnagar Upazila BNP and former upazila chairman; and Alamgir Khan Satu, a district BNP member.

Each aspirant is engaged in intensive mass communication campaign to secure voters' support. Leaflets detailing the party's 31-point agenda are being distributed widely, and candidates are actively attending local meetings and community events to win hearts and minds.

Jamaat's declared candidate Tajuddin Ahmed Khan, the district Ameer, has long been active in this constituency. He continues to conduct extensive campaigning, participating in party programmes and community-based activities, emphasising his commitment to social work as a pathway to gaining voter confidence. IAB is represented by Khademul Islam, the District President, who is also undertaking similar outreach programmes.

Former MP Masud Arun expressed confidence in his chances, highlighting his longstanding political experience despite facing attacks and legal challenges over the years. "The party's decision is final, and I will wholeheartedly support whoever is nominated by BNP," he said.

Advocate Kamrul Hasan emphasised the party's unity, noting that competition for nomination is natural in a party as large as BNP. "Many will want to be candidates. Regardless of the nomination outcome, we will work together for the chosen leader," he stated.

Jamaat's Tajuddin Ahmed Khan shared his optimism about the election, noting that interactions with voters indicate a desire for change and new leadership. "The public's response during our campaigns has been encouraging. I remain hopeful," he added.

MEHERPUR-2: This constituency covers Gangni Upazila.
The seat has 267,599 registered voters.
Aspirants for the BNP nomination here include former MP Amjad Hossain, newly elected District BNP President Jabed Masud Milton, and former Gangni Upazila BNP General Secretary Asaduzzaman Bablu.

These candidates are actively campaigning across rural areas, markets, and river ghats, distributing leaflets and are engaged with voters to build support.

The constituency also hosts candidates from other parties. Jamaat  has declared Md. Nazmul Huda, a District Jamaat Shura member and former upazila chairman.

NCP is represented by Advocate Shakil Ahmed, Legal Coordinator of the Central Committee, while IAB has selected Mostafizur Rahman Sentu, Gangni Upazila President, as its candidate. Nationalist Democratic Movement has nominated Jabedur Rahman Joni, Central Office Secretary, as its candidate.

Jabed Masud Milton, District BNP President, highlighted the party's election-focused approach. "BNP is committed to fielding leaders who represent the people's interests. Whoever is nominated will have the party's full support," he said.

Former MP Amjad Hossain echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the party's competitive nomination process. "Many aspire to candidacy, and that is only natural. I remain hopeful for a positive outcome," he noted. Similarly, Asaduzzaman Bablu emphasised party unity and commitment to collective action regardless of the nomination results.

Across both constituencies, voters are showing unprecedented enthusiasm. Streets, marketplaces, and river ghats are alive with political discourse while local media covers candidates' movements and public reactions. Social gatherings, such as weddings and community events, have become platforms for political engagement, reflecting a highly participatory electorate.

The district's compact size and the personal connections among its residents make campaigning a unique challenge and opportunity. Candidates are expected to balance high-profile public events with more intimate community interactions, from tea stalls to local mosques and schools. These grassroots interactions are crucial, as Meherpur's electorate places significant emphasis on personal credibility, social service, and historical consciousness.
