JUCSU polls: CEC vows to resign if vote rigging proven

Chief Election Commissioner of Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU), Professor Md Moniruzzaman, has declared he will resign if anyone can prove that vote rigging or ballot fraud occurred during the recent JUCSU and hall union elections.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Professor Moniruzzaman said, “The election was conducted in a free, fair and transparent manner. If anyone can present proof of vote tampering or fake voting, I will resign; I'll even forgo my pension benefits.”

Addressing questions about opposition groups boycotting the election, the CEC noted that such decisions are personal and beyond the commission’s control. 

“Some chose to reject the process; others chose to participate. That’s the essence of democratic freedom,” he said.

Regarding the reported resignation of fellow Election Commissioner Professor Mohammad Mafruhi Sattar, Moniruzzaman stated that no formal resignation letter had been received by the commission and therefore no official comment could be made.

He further added that the commission’s work is guided strictly by the rules and constitution of JUCSU. 

“We’re not counting votes based on who wins or loses. We’re conducting the count according to the bylaws of JUCSU,” he asserted.

This year’s JUCSU election saw a voter base of 11,897 students; 6,115 male and 5,782 female. Voter turnout stood at approximately 67 to 68 percent.
