In memory of Rashedul Islam, a student of Film and Media Studies department at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) who tragically died after being struck by lightning, the department has named its seminar library after him.

On Thursday, Rashedul’s parents officially inaugurated the nameplate of newly named “Md Rashedul Islam Memorial Seminar Library.”

The emotional ceremony was attended by family members, teachers and fellow students, many of whom were moved to tears.

Dr. Zillur Rahman Pol, Head of Film and Media Studies department, said, “Rashed was a pride of our department. His creativity and passion inspired us all. His sudden passing is an irreplaceable loss not only to his family but to the entire department. This library naming is a symbol of our collective love and remembrance.”

With a heavy heart, Rashedul’s father Rahenur Rahman expressed, “He was my pride. I watched him grow up with dreams in his eyes. Now those dreams are all that remain; my son is no longer with us.”

During the event, teachers, students and university officials offered prayers for Rashedul's departed soul.

Rashedul Islam, a student of 2020–21 academic session, died on Sunday (October 5) at Bhabanipur Ghat of Homna Upazila in Cumilla district, after being struck by lightning while crossing a river by boat on his way back to campus.

He also served as the President of the Cumilla Students’ Association at the university. In honour of his memory and leadership, the organization has posthumously named him their "Eternal President."
