Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) formed a human chain, protesting the recent attack on MPO-listed teachers and expressing solidarity with their movement for fair rights on Thursday afternoon.

The protest was held on the road adjacent to the university’s Shaheed Minar.

During the demonstration, Rakibul Hasan, student of Chemistry Department, said, "Before the July uprising, we saw university teachers receive praise when they protested. But when our secondary and higher secondary teachers raise their voices, they face boiling water, tear gas, and brutality. Even teachers are now divided into elite and lower classes."

He added, "We don’t want to see such divisions among teachers. Those very teachers helped us reach university and secure jobs in ministries. We stand by their rightful demands."

He also said that the teachers have now begun a ‘Long March to Jamuna’ to press home their logical demands, which should be met immediately."

Zia Uddin Ayan, joint convener of Bangladesh Democratic Students' Council (BDSC) JU unit, said, "Teaching is a noble profession. The teachers who are the architects of the nation are now being subjected to injustice and discrimination. We have protested against inequality since 2024, yet the same discrimination persists in society today. Now our teachers are fighting that same inequality."

He further said, "While teachers are taking to the streets, the incompetent education advisers remain silent. We demand house rent and medical allowances for teachers without delay."

He also said that If their logical demands are not accepted today, we too will join the Long March to Jamuna to press for nationalisation of all MPO-listed institutions."
