Police on Saturday stated that the Dhaka University Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader Shahriar Alam Shammo was killed for obstructing drug dealing at Suhrawardy Udyan.

The investigation officers unveiled the motive behind the killing in a charge sheet submitted to Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday. The charge-sheet named seven individuals for their involvement in the murder.

Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Akhtar Morshed, who led the investigation, confirmed the development to the media on Saturday.

The accused are Mehedi Hasan, Md Rabbi alias Kobutor Rabbi, Md Ripon alias Akash, Nahid Hasan Papel, Md Hriday Islam, Md Harun or Rashid Sohag alias Lombu Sohag, and Md Robin.

Alongside the murder charges, police said the suspects were engaged in drug trafficking activities in the park.

The DB also recommended that charges be dropped against four others — Tamim Howlader, Samrat Mallik, Polash Sardar, and Sujon Sarkar — citing lack of sufficient evidence.

Shammo, 25, was a student in Dhaka University’s International Relations Department (2018–19 session) and served as the literature and publications secretary of A F Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal.

According to the case details, Shammo was stabbed around 11 PM on May 13 at Suhrawardy Udyan after reportedly confronting a group involved in drug trading. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead shortly after midnight.

His elder brother, Shariful Islam, later filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station on May 14, naming 10 to 12 individuals as suspects.

Police stated the charge-sheet now establishes a clear motive linked to Shammo’s attempt to stop illegal drug activities inside the park.
