Bangladesh Cricket Council (BCC) Director and Age-Group Committee Chairman Asif Akbar has called for urgent and structured development of cricket at the district level, emphasising youth engagement and year-round coaching.

He made this remark while addressing a discussion meeting at Panchagarh District Stadium on Wednesday.

Asif Akbar highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for young players and expanding cricket’s reach.

“We are working to strengthen district cricket associations and involve madrasa students. Coaches will be trained at the upazila level to ensure every child receives proper guidance,” he said.

He mentioned the need to protect children from social vices, noting that 80 lakh children in the country are vulnerable to drug abuse.

“We must guide children properly so they do not go astray. Cricket is a scientific and engaging sport, and we aim to place it on a strong, professional footing,” he added.

Asif also announced plans to establish an eight-month cricket calendar and maintain regular coaching programmes.

He urged organisers to submit lists for female teams and emphasised that expanding age-group cricket and improving facilities would help produce top-level players nationwide.

The meeting was presided over by District Sports Association Secretary Abul Hashem, with BCC Director Hasanuzzaman, Secretary Armanul Islam, and umpire Shakil among the special guests.

Local players, organisers and parents participated, sharing suggestions to enhance the sport in Panchagarh.
