
PANCHAGARH, Dec 2: The 50th founding anniversary of the Panchagarh Battalion (18 BGB) of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was celebrated on Monday.
In its glorious history of 50 years, this unit has made outstanding contributions to the integrity and border security of the country. From the War of Independence to modern border management, they have served as the "vigilant guards of the border".
Since assuming duty on December 1, 1975, the battalion has worked tirelessly to secure the border, prevent drug and human trafficking, and protect national interests. Each member has performed his duties with professionalism, adopting honesty, loyalty, dedication, and discipline as guiding principles.
In his welcome speech on the occasion of the founding anniversary, Commander Lt. Col. Abdullah Mohammad Kayes said, the Panchagarh Battalion (18 BGB) was established on December 1, 1975, at a place called Mahipal under the Comilla Sector. Since its establishment, it has served with dedication and professionalism in Joylaskar, Marishya, Rangpur, Wallachara, Kaptai, Netrakona, Balipara, Chuadanga and Chhotaharina and assumed responsibility in Panchagarh from February 25, 2012. After assuming responsibility, it has served 19 BOPs and 01 ICP located in an area of 135.591 km, and, in the current year, smuggled goods worth more than Tk 1 crore 79 lakh along with 16 accused were seized. In addition to protecting the border, it has assisted the civil administration in controlling the law and order situation. Furthermore, the battalion has been able to establish cordial relations with its adversary and earn a good reputation in the civilian environment by conducting BGB-BSF joint retreat parades at Banglabandha ICP twice a week (Saturday and Tuesday). Moreover, this year it achieved the honour of becoming the "champion" in the Rangpur Region Inter-Battalion Firing Competition and the "runner-up" in the Volleyball Competition.
A reception was organised at noon to mark the establishment anniversary. Prior to the reception, a cake was cut by the Director General of the BGB to mark the occasion. Brigadier General ASM Nasher, Commander of the North West Region, was present as the chief guest, while Colonel Mohammad Suruj Mia, Commander of the Thakurgaon Sector, was present as the special guest. Deputy Commissioner Kazi Md. Sayemuzzaman, Superintendent of Police Md. Rabiul Islam, Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Mizanur Rahman, along with other military and civilian officials and members of the print and electronic media, were also present.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, BGB Rangpur Region Commander ASM Nasher said, "With the ideals of patriotism, professionalism and self-sacrifice, the Panchagarh Battalion has become a symbol of the nation's pride and confidence. This force has made unforgettable contributions over the past 50 years. Since its establishment, the BGB has performed the great responsibility of protecting the country's sovereignty and securing the border with great efficiency."
The first half of the programme concluded with the reception. In addition, a cultural programme was organised in the evening on the BGB training ground premises to mark the founding anniversary.
