Journalists from different print and electronic media on Saturday demanded exemplary punishment to the police members responsible for Thursday’s assault on a private television channel’s journalists.

The demand came from a human chain rally organized in front of National Museum at Shahbagh in the city protesting the brutal attack of police on two journalists of ATN News during a clash amid shutdown called against the Rampal Power Plant.

Over 300 journalists took part in the hour-long human chain tying their faces with black cloths and wearing black badges.

In his speech, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists' President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul demanded withdrawal of home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal’s remarks over the incident.

Defending law enforcers, the home minister in a programme on Friday said that police never assault newsmen, but only pushing and shoving take place sometimes.

“Such kind of statement from home minister will encourage police to become more belligerent” he added.

“Journalists are killed and assaulted continuously in Bangladesh but there is no justice as culture of impunity exists in the country,” he added.

Munni Saha, Head of news of ATN News,  said that police would assault journalists every now and then during information gathering and later, they get promoted.. what kind of thing it is?"

Photojournalist Abdul Alim and reporter Kazi Ehsan Bin Didar of private television channel ATN News were assaulted by the police while on duty at Shahbagh during the hartal on Thursday.
