Protest intensifies in Kabaddi over Ad-hoc committee leadership

In a crescendo of dissent that has roiled corners of the national sporting fraternity, Kabaddi players, officials and stakeholders have mounted a vigorous protest against the appointment of SM Neowaj Sohag as General Secretary of the Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation's ad?hoc committee.

The movement, emanating from deep concerns over governance and fairness, has gathered momentum following the resignation of Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan last week.

Critics allege that Sohag's elevation to the key position was enabled through entrenched patronage networks under the outgoing sports administration, a charge repeatedly articulated by Kabaddi organisers on social media and during demonstrations held near the Sher?e?Bangla National Cricket Stadium. They argue that his tenure has been marked by opaque decision?making, alleged financial irregularities and an absence of democratic process.

Dissenters point to controversial budgetary allocations around the recently held Women's Kabaddi World Cup and assert that significant sums remain unaccounted for, questions that have intensified calls for accountability. Additionally, complaints from within the Kabaddi community highlight perceived unilateral control over officiating and administrative appointments under Sohag's leadership.

Beyond leadership concerns, many disciplines within Bangladesh's sporting landscape continue to grapple with inadequate training venues, a shortage of consistent practice facilities and limited international exposure, challenges that protestors say are exacerbated by preferential treatment of certain programmes.

Supporters of Sohag, however, maintain that he has sought to drive development within the sport despite adversity. As the debate continues, calls for inclusive elections and transparent governance structures grow louder, underscoring the broader demand for sporting integrity across Bangladesh.
