Palestine has withdrawn its candidate for the presidency of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

Following the withdrawal of the Palestinian candidature, Bangladesh will now compete with Cyprus, a diplomatic source told UNB on Thursday.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has nominated Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman for the position, said the source.

Bangladesh floated her candidature ahead of Palestine.

The PGA election will take place in June this year at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The position belongs to the Asia-Pacific region for the 2026-27 term.

Then Foreign Minister of Bangladesh the late Humayun Rasheed Chowdhury served as President of the 41st session of the UNGA during 1986-87.
