Man sentenced to 6-month in jail for killing neighbour’s pet cat

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced Akbar Hossain Shiblu to six months in jail for killing his neighbour’s pet cat in the capital's Mohammadpur area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir also imposed a fine of Tk 10,000, with an additional one month of simple imprisonment in case of default of payment.

According to the prosecution, the cat belonged to a resident named Mansur of Muktijoddha Tower in Mohammadpur. 

The accused was absent during the verdict, prompting the court to issue a conviction and arrest warrant against him, said plaintiff’s lawyer Zakir Hossain.

The case was filed on February 5 last year by Nafisa Nowrin Chowdhury on behalf of People for Animal Welfare Foundation.

According to the complaint, CCTV footage showed Shiblu kicking the cat like a football on February 1, resulting in its death.
