Bangladesh's Prime Minister Tarique Rahman made an unannounced visit to the National Stadium, Dhaka on Thursday afternoon, in a rare departure from the usual protocol surrounding a head of government.
The surprise appearance came during a friendly match to mark Independence and National Day, where former national footballers were set to compete in two sides, Red and Green. Both teams had already assembled in the dugout and were preparing for kick-off when the Prime Minister entered the ground through the VIP gate.
He was accompanied by his daughter Zaima Rahman and State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque.
Upon arrival, the Prime Minister went directly to the dugout, where he greeted the players and exchanged brief courtesies. He later walked around the ground along the athletics track before taking a seat in the dugout to watch the match.
His decision to observe the game from pitchside, rather than from the stands or a designated enclosure, presented an uncommon scene, as heads of government are typically seen in more formal settings during public engagements.
During the interval, he briefly moved to the VVIP lounge to offer prayers before returning to the dugout to continue watching the match.
The visit marked his first attendance at a sporting event since assuming office. The unscheduled nature of the visit and the understated manner in which it was conducted drew attention among those present at the venue.
