MOULVIBAZAR, Mar 29: Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed at three oil depots in Sreemangal to prevent illegal stockpiling, restore discipline in fuel distribution, and ensure uninterrupted supply.
Lieutenant Colonel Sarkar Asif Mahmud, commanding officer of BGB's 46 Battalion in Sreemangal, inspected the depots on Sunday morning.
Sources said two platoons of BGB personnel from the 46 Battalion have been stationed since March 25 at the Padma, Meghna and Jamuna oil depots in Sreemangal.
Officials said the move aims to prevent illegal hoarding of fuel, maintain a stable supply chain, and ensure overall security at the depots. BGB members have already begun round-the-clock duty at each facility.
According to BGB, recent volatility in global fuel markets has impacted the country, prompting some unscrupulous groups to attempt stockpiling. The deployment is intended to curb such activities and maintain order in fuel marketing.
On-site visits found BGB personnel maintaining strict vigilance at depot entry points. Documents of fuel-carrying vehicles are being checked, while entry and exit are being closely controlled. Suspicious movements are also under surveillance, and additional monitoring has been introduced during oil loading onto tankers.
Depot authorities said there is currently a slight shortage of fuel. Although supply remains ongoing, distribution is taking some time. However, the presence of BGB has brought a sense of relief among stakeholders by enhancing security at the depots.
Lt Col Asif Mahmud said the deployment was made to ensure normal fuel supply and prevent any attempts at illegal stockpiling. He added that surveillance has also been intensified during fuel transportation by rail from Chattogram and from depots to different destinations.
Meanwhile, a coordination meeting was held under the upazila administration to ensure smooth fuel supply and distribution, bringing together depot owners, pump owners, BGB officials, and law enforcement agencies.
