
TANGAIL, Apr 12: The foundation stone has been laid for the construction of a bridge at Patharghata, the connecting point of the long-awaited Basail, Sakhipur and Mirzapur upazilas in Tangail.
On Saturday afternoon, the Minister for Liberation War Affairs, Ahmed Azam Khan, MP, laid the foundation stone for the bridge as the chief guest.
Under the chairmanship of Tangail LGED's Executive Engineer, Mohammad Kamruzzaman, the special guest was Abul Kalam Azad Siddiqui, MP for Tangail-7 (Mirzapur) and BNP's Child Affairs Secretary. Among others present were Amin Sharif Supan, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Finance; Aklima Begum, Upazila Executive Officer of Basail; Mohammad Neyamat Ullah, Assistant Commissioner (Land); and Kazi Fattaour Rahman, Upazila Engineer of Basail.
The Patharghata bridge has been taken up on a priority basis for construction in response to the long-standing demands of local people. Once built, the bridge will ease the lives of people in the three upazilas and accelerate economic activities. Daily commuting, transport of agricultural products and trade and commerce will gain momentum. This bridge will play an immense role, especially in the rural economy.
According to reports, under the initiative of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), a contracting firm named National Development Engineers Limited (NDE) is constructing the bridge at a contract price of Tk 63 crore and 50 lakh. The construction work of the bridge is expected to be completed by 3 June 2027. Once this bridge is built, it will establish connections between Basail, Mirzapur and Sakhipur upazilas and bring about a ground-breaking development in the communication system.
