Patwari warns CEC over 'poll irregularities'

National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser Nasiruddin Patwari issued a stern warning to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin over allegations of election engineering and irregularities, stating that the Election Commission would face restructuring and legal accountability if another mass uprising takes place in the country.

He made the remarks while speaking as a special guest at a reception accorded to the newly elected committee of RFED and the outgoing committee at the Election Training Institute in Agargaon in the capital on Monday.

Addressing the gathering in the presence of the Chief Election Commissioner, other election commissioners and leaders of different political parties, Nasiruddin alleged that the 13th National Parliament election was marred by widespread electoral fraud.

"The current commission is surviving under the Prime Minister's good graces," he said, warning that if the upcoming local government elections are not conducted in a fully transparent and impartial manner, the NCP would launch a "tough movement".

He further said, "If there is another mass uprising, the Election Commission will be restructured first for reforms." He also warned that the current commission would face trial over allegations of election rigging.

Referring to his own experience during the parliamentary polls, the NCP leader said, "When Afroza Abbas took five to six thousand people in front of the divisional commissioner's office, if I had called, 50 thousand to one lakh people would have gathered there."

"There would have been a bloody clash and many bodies would have fallen," he added.

Explaining why he refrained from escalating the situation, Nasiruddin said, "I stepped back for only one reason. If a father's son had died in that hospital, I would not have been able to answer him. So, Insha Allah, this will be judged in Bangladesh.

Those who led this Election Commission during this election, we will judge them on the soil of Bengal."
