A member of the District Special Branch (DSB) of police was withdrawn and attached to the police lines in Chapainawabganj’s Gomostapur upazila over allegations of making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

The incident took place on Tuesday during the inauguration programme of a land service fair organised by the upazila land office.

According to sources, the accused police member, identified as Abdus Salam, allegedly made offensive comments about the prime minister in front of two journalists before the programme began, triggering tension among BNP leaders and activists present at the venue.

Following the incident, the accused officer was withdrawn from duty and attached to the police lines.

Later, Chapainawabganj-2 lawmaker Dr Mizanur Rahman and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Umme Salma Rumi intervened to calm the situation.

BNP and journalist leader Alauddin Parvez, who was present at the spot, confirmed the matter and said tension briefly spread among BNP activists, but the situation was brought under control through prompt administrative action.

However, accused DSB member Abdus Salam denied making any derogatory remarks and claimed that two journalists exaggerated the issue and attempted to create unrest by provoking BNP activists.

Meanwhile, DSB Gomostapur Zone sub-inspector (SI) Moyenuddin said DIO-1 informed him that the accused officer had been attached to the police lines. No detailed official statement was issued by police in this regard.
