India ends Bangladesh's dominance with 3-0 victory in Women's SAFF

India reclaimed its regional superiority in women's football by defeating defending champions Bangladesh 3-0 in the ongoing SAFF Women's Championship in Goa.

This is Bangladesh's first defeat to their neighbors since 2019, ending a streak where the Bengal Tigresses had dominated the last two editions of the tournament.

The match saw significant tactical shifts from Bangladesh coach Peter Butler, who replaced captain Afida with Surma Jannat and brought back midfielder Monika Chakma. Despite these changes, Bangladesh struggled to find their rhythm.

While Anika Rania Siddiqui had scored within 11 seconds in the previous match against Maldives, she failed to capitalize on early opportunities against a disciplined Indian side.

India broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when Pyari took advantage of a defensive lapse to slot home a diagonal shot, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead at halftime. Bangladesh’s woes deepened in the second half when defender Surma Jannat conceded a penalty, which substitute Lindakom converted comfortably.

Malavika later added a third goal to seal a dominant 3-0 win for the hosts.

With this victory, India finishes as Group A champions with six points. Despite the loss, Bangladesh progresses to the semifinals as group runners-up. They are scheduled to face Group B champions Nepal on June 3.
