2 held over ex-Swechchhasebak dal leader murder

Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of former Swechchhasebak Dal leader Billal Hossain Talukdar in the capital's Mouchak area.

The arrestees are Al Amin, convener of Ward No. 19 Jubo Dal, and Riaz, an activist of the same ward unit.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Ramna Division) Sheikh Zahidul Islam said the two were arrested during separate drives conducted in Dhaka and Munshiganj on Monday night based on confidential information.

Billal, a former convener of Ramna Thana Swechchhasebak Dal and a businessman involved in the cement and sand trade, was killed on Monday at the parking area of Anarkali Super Market adjacent to Siddheshwari Boys' School.

According to police, preliminary investigations indicate that the killing was linked to a longstanding dispute over control of footpaths, extortion activities and local dominance in the area.

Police said further legal proceedings in the case are underway.
