NATORE, Mar 16: Two farmers under Sadar upazila have started cumin seed farming here for the first time.
Mahbub Islam, a farmer of Chhatni Diarpara village in the upazila cultivated cumin seed on 0.625 bigha of land.
He said, "I sowed half kilogram of the seed after ploughing the land in the Bengali month of Agrahayan and I will get the production in the next Baishakh. My total cost was Tk 8,000."
Another farmer Habibur Rahman of Ekdala Narayanpur area in the same upazila said, "I cultivated the same quantity of cumin on the same land like Mahbub. I am expecting to get five maunds of the produce."
He further said, "About 150 farmers of the area have shown interest to cultivate the crop in the next season. The produce can be sold at Tk 300 per kg in the market."
Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO) Abdul Jalil Mridha of the area said, they are providing necessary advice to the farmers time to time.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Dr. Saiful Alam said, "The cultivation of cumin is profitable. So, more and more farmers are showing interest in it. Besides, the agriculture department is providing necessary help and advice to the farmers."
