KUSHTIA, Mar 28: Commuters are suffering a lot as 50-kilometre long Kushtia-Rajbari road has been in a deplorable condition for the last few years.
Local people and owners of small-transports barricaded the road several times, demanding its immediate repairing.
The road has been lying in a terrible condition for the last three years and has developed numerous potholes and cracks, making the vehicular movement a tough job.
Sources said that about 50-kilometre long Kushtia-Rajbari road is in susceptible condition and remains unfit for plying of traffics for the last five years.
After a long movement for the renovation of the road, only five-kilometre road was reconstructed last year. But the re-construction work of the rest of the road is yet to be started. As a result, trucks, buses, minibuses, and tempos run on the road amid serious risk.
On the other hand, thousands of people including students of schools, colleges and madrasas, general people and officials from different places take this road to go to their respective destinations in Kushtia town everyday in difficulties.
"Five passengers were injured when my three-wheeler turned turtle after falling into one of the potholes in Biljani area couple of weeks ago," said Edris Mia, a three-wheeler driver of Charpara area in Khoksa upazila.
Amir Hossain, a madrasa teacher of Khoksa area, said, "As there is no alternative we have to use the risky road to travel to Kushtia headquarters for various purposes."
"Elderly patients suffer most when they have to use the bumpy road to go to Kushtia Medical College Hospital or Faridpur Medical College Hospital," said Alem, an ambulance driver.
"I used to go to college on bicycle but for the last few months I am compelled to go on CNG or buses due to the risky condition of the road," said Usuf Ali, a student in Kumarkali upazila.
Ziaul Haider, executive engineer of Kushtia Roads and Highway Department said he has already sent a proposal to the ministry concerned to repair the damaged road.
