Technical glitch and strong storm hit two major transmission lines of national grid on Monday night, paralysing the normal life of millions of people in 32 districts of the country's northern and southern region.
The 230KV national grid's Ashuganj-Sirajganj line and 230KV Ghorasal-Ishwardi line tripped around 11:30amon Monday that halted the electricity production at 25 units of 27 plants in the two regions.
"We have restored power supply to most of the areas. The areas that are still experiencing outages will get back power soon," State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid told media on Tuesday evening."
The government has formed a four-member panel to investigate the cause of power outage. The team will submit its report within five days, sources in the Power Division said.
Almost half of Bangladesh's population lives in Khulna, Barisal, Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions comprising 32 districts. Faridpur and some other districts outside Dhaka also experienced power outages
According to the Power Development Board, there are 27 plants with the capacity of producing 2,249 megawatts of power in Barisal, Khulna, Rajshahi and Rangpur.
West Zone Power Distribution's Superin-tending Engineer Ikhtiar Uddin said the line tripped in Barisal around 11:30am and 22-24MW of electricitywas supplied from Bhola.
The grid failure virtually led to the shutdown of a many power plants in the country's west and northern regions, said a top official at state-owned Power Development Board (PDB).
