NATORE, May 5: The people at Chalan Beel (water body) area have become worried as water remained stagnant in the beel due to recent incessant rainfall.
If the situation turns worse, the existing embankments and sluice gates will get damaged, according to field sources.
As a result, it might cause a huge loss to the crops which have been cultivated inside the beel, the sources said.
Under this situation, the farmers of the area have demanded immediate repairing of these embankments and sluice gates.
In this connection, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Natore Shahina Khatun called an emergency meeting with the Water Development Board (WDB) and advised them to take necessary action.
It may be mentioned that, around 2,500 hectares of Boro paddy lands and other hundreds of hectares of lands of seasonal fruits like watermelon and bangi, maize and nut have gone under water due to the rainfall.
Concerned sources said, some sluice gates were built in 1990 at a cost of Tk 6 crore and they are located at Pana Ullah canal point in Halti beel, at Ninguine point of the Atrai River and at Hashpukuria and Naribari canal points of the Nagore River. But, most of those are now out of order and cannot work due to lack of proper maintenance.
Rubon Ali, a farmer of Sherkole village said, "The Natore WDB built the above mentioned sluice gates at different points of Halti beel and Chalan beel. But no concerned of the WDB came to see the condition of the sluice gates."
Abdul Gony, a farmer of Patkole village said, the sluice gates and the embankments need immediate repairing otherwise the situation will turn worse and the farmers will lose everything.
Shafiqul Islam, chairman of Singra upazila parishad said, "Cracks have developed on the flood control embankments which have remained unrepaired for long. As a result, the embankments cannot work properly, leaving croplands go under water."
Sudhangsu Kumar Sarker, executive engineer of Natore WDB said, "There are 17 sluice gates in Singra and Gurudaspur upazilas under Chalan beel area of the district. Of those, 16 are running as usual. The main cause of this situation is that the vested quarters have built unplanned bridges at some points of the embankments taking no permission from the authority. In this connection, letters have been sent to related departments seeking necessary action."
DC Shahina Khatun said, she has already asked the relevant authority to take needful steps in this connection, and hopefully the work will be started soon.
