SHARIATPUR, May 7: People have been suffering much for deplorable condition of different roads and highways in the district including the 45-kilometre long Shariatpur-Chandpur regional highway.
The movement of different types of vehicles including the long distance trucks loaded with various goods, buses and other vehicles is also facing setback.
The only road from Shariatpur to Chittagong via Chandpur and Shariatpur to Khulna and Benapole was not repaired for the last seven years making the road unfit for traffic movement. As a result, numerous potholes have been created on the road which becomes inundated during any scanty rainfall, causing sufferings to the commuters.
Mohar Ali, Shamsul Haq, Minhaz Ali and Kolomai, truck drivers on Shariatpur-Chandpur route said, "We suffer much in moving vehicles through the road. Sometimes, vehicles loaded with goods and valuables fall into roadside ditches."
Besides, the condition of Shariatpur-Bhedarganj road, Shariatpur-Janjira road, Shariatpur-Burirhat road, Damudya-Gosairhat road, Sakhipur-Gosairhat road, Naria-Ghorishar road, Ghorishar-Bhedarganj road, Bhedarganj-Sakhipur road and Bhedarganj-Damudya roads are also in deplorable condition.
The miserable conditions of these roads have been published in different dailies many a times but no step has been taken by the authorities concerned.
On the other hand, the makeshift shops of tyres and tubes, repair shops, welding shops, steel furniture shops, saloon, fruits shops, lead machine shops, tea stalls, hotels and restaurants have been setup beside the roads that have narrowed them, increasing chances of fatal accidents.
All the footpaths in the district town as well as the roads in six upazilas have been occupied by floating shops and shopkeepers which is hampering easy movement the vehicles as well as the wayfarers.
The district and upazila administrations have failed to evict the unauthorised shops.
While asked, Md Sazzad Hossain, executive engineer of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Shariatpur said, "We try to develop our roads for easy movement of vehicles but some unauthorised vehicles like Mahindra, Koriman, Nochhimon, Votvoti are damaging our roads randomly."
Md Helal, inspector of Shariatpur Traffic Police said, "Unauthorised vehicles are moving on the roads under powerful political influence. As a result, we can't take action against them and remove those from the roads."
