MEHERPUR, May 7: The repairing work of Bhomordah-Jorpukuria rural road under Gangni upazila of the district was suspended by the locals for using substandard materials.
The sub-assistant engineer and the designated contractor were allegedly showing political and muscle power to continue the work. Later, the agitated people stopped the repairing works on Sunday last.
According to Gangni upazila engineering office, Ehsanul Haque Traders of Kushtia got the work order to repair the seven-kilometre long rural road at a cost of 1 crore 24 lakh taka. Later, that work order was illegally purchased by another contractor Pintu Mia of Baliaghat village under Gangni upazila. As per the contract, the road was supposed to be carpeted with three-metre width and 12cm thickness.
Member of Shaharbati union parishad (UP) and a resident of Jorpukuria village Shahabuddin said, "From the beginning, the contractor is using substandard bricks and it was duly informed to the upazila engineer and the executive engineer of local government engineering department (LGED). The concerned authority did not take any necessary action rather approved the contract."
He further said, "As per the rule, the carpeting of the road should be completed after prime coating. But no prime coating was used there. The rolling was done slovenly. The carpeting work which has so far been completed is going to be damaged even after plying of rickshaw van. The contractor was found to carpet with 7mm thickness instead of 12mm."
The matter was taken to the notice of the designated sub-assistant engineer of LGED. The contractor, however, did not pay heed rather threatened to lodge cases against the local people. As a result, the local people became furious and stopped the work.
While visiting the areas, it was found that it was not rolled properly, no prime coating was used and the carpeting was completed on the dust.
The Sub-Assistant Engineer of LGED Touhid said, "There might be some fault in the work as I have to look after more than one work in different places."
He did not give any reply about using prime coating rather he advised the correspondent to contact with the upazila engineer.
Acting Upazila Engineer Shamsul Alam said, he heard that the work has been stopped.
Executive Engineer of LGED in Meherpur Azimuddin Sardar said, "I know nothing about the incident. I will instruct the upazila engineer to restart the work as per the work order. The concerned engineer and the contractor will face consequences if the work is not done properly."
