SHARIATPUR, May 13: Lack of capital and marketing facilities is affecting the handicraft sector in the district.
Around 80 thousand people in six upazilas of the district, belonging to low-income groups, are engaged in making different household items and other articles including fish traps, baskets, hand fans etc.
The fishermen who cannot catch fish after the rainy season, make these items that provide them with money to support their families during the lean period. Besides, small and marginal farmers of the district are engaged in handicraft when they have no work to do.
Akkas Molla, Shahid Miah, Abdul Majid Gazi of Dubledia village under Janjira upazila of the district said, they are engaged in making different handicraft items and earn some money to support their families.
Most of the landless and marginal farmers of Bilashpur, Kunderchar and Dubledia villages in the upazila are engaged in making one kind of fish trap with bamboos and one kind of folding hand fan with palm leaves and bamboo pieces when they have no work in the farm land.
The farmers of the area become part-time artisans and make the items. But it is unfortunate that the poor artisans do not get fair prices of their products. Some middlemen are exploiting the situation and making a brisk business depriving the poor craftsmen of their due remuneration.
Shariful Islam of Bilashpur village under Janjira upazila makes folding fans during leisure time with a view to adding to the income of his family. He sells per hundred fans at Tk 500 to Tk 1000 to the middlemen. The fans are usually sold in the town at Tk 10 to 15 per piece.
Abdul Hai, Abul Paikar, Khaleque, Ashraf Ali, Narayan Master and Niranjan of Kunderchar village under the upazila are also engaged in making fish traps.
Each of them earns Tk 20,000 to 25,000 by selling those in the markets.
Abdul Hai said if the rural craftsmen are properly trained and loans on easy terms are given from banks, the quality of their products will improve considerably.
The people of the district urged the government to take necessary measures in this connection.
