KUSHTIA, May 15: The farmers here are expecting a bumper production of groundnut this year due to favourable weather, sowing of good variety groundnut and use of balanced fertilisers.
According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), a total of 3,206 hectares of land have been brought under groundnut cultivation in six upazilas of the district this year with a production target of 4,089 tonnes of groundnut.
Hafizur Rahman, a farmer of Chilmari char area under Daulatpur upazila said, "I have cultivated groundnut on one bigha of land this year, and the condition of groundnut is well. I am expecting bumper production this year."
Another farmer Kazal Mia of Jagolba area under Khoksa upazila said, "I am expecting bumper production of groundnut as I have used balanced fertilisers in my land. The condition of groundnut is well."
Kader Molla, a farmer of Sadipur area under Kumarkhali upazila said, "I have cultivated groundnut on two-bigha land this year. I used balanced fertilisers. I am now expecting bumper production of groundnut."
Deputy Director of the DAE in Kushtia Kinkon Chowdhury said, "I am also expecting bumper production of groundnut this year in the district because the weather is favourable. Moreover, the farmers have used balanced fertilisers and there is no pest attack this year."
Meanwhile, many farmers alleged that due to lack of proper marketing policy, the middlemen or wholesalers are making extra profits depriving them of the fair price.
They urged the government to take proper steps for marketing groundnut for the sake of the farmers.
