SIRAJGANJ, June 3: The initiative of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) to sell essential items at fair prices during Ramadan through open trucks in the district has been suffering setback from the beginning of the fasting month due to inadequate supplies.
There are only two trucks engaged by the TCB in the district for selling the listed essentials- sugar, soya bean, lentil and chickpea--which is very insufficient for a huge number of people in the district.
Therefore, the question arises among the commoners that is how much impact the initiative is going to put on to control the high market prices of the commodities.
As the TCB sale has failed to meet the demand of the low-income-group people due to shortage of commodities, they have to buy the essentials at much higher prices from markets. Thus, the plan to keep market prices of the essentials during Ramadan through TCB's open market sale is going in vain in the district, according to field sources.
Like previous years, the state-run trading body formally started selling four essential commodities in the district through two open trucks from May 15. The open market sales are supposed to continue till June 18.
TCB sources said, they are selling 250-300 kg of lentil, 300-400 kg of sugar, 300-400 kg of chickpea and 300-400 litre of soya bean through the open trucks in front of Court Building of Zila Sadar and Sadar Upazila Parishad every day. A consumer can buy maximum five litre of soya bean, four kg of sugar, three kg of lentil and five kg of chickpea. The sale starts at 9am in the morning and continues till 5pm in the afternoon every day. Sometimes the trucks sell the commodities roaming around different places in the town.
Sugar is selling at Tk 55 per kg, chickpea at 70 per kg, lentil at Tk 80 per kg and soya bean is selling at Tk 85 per kg here, the sources said.
While visiting this correspondent found a long queue of people of lower and middle income groups in front of the TCB's selling trucks.
They expressed their satisfaction over the prices of the essentials being sold through open truck, but they claimed the supplies are inadequate compared to high demand.
Rickshaw-puller Rahman Sheikh said they are getting the commodities in good quality from the open market sale 5 to 10 taka lesser than the market price which makes a huge difference as far as the poor people are concerned.
He demanded the authorities concerned to continue the open market sale of daily essential commodities round the year.
Bashir Uddin of Malshapara area in the town said that the TCB's Ramadan sale is a good initiative. For this reason lower-income   group of people can buy the essentials at much lower prices.
Ujjal Hossain, a seller of TCB's dealer Messrs Soni Traders, said they sell out the products much before the set duration due to excessive demand every day.
Deputy Commissioner of the district Kamrun Nahar Siddiqua said "They cannot increase the number of trucks despite having keenness as the TCB is carrying out the programme with directive of the concerned ministry and we are just monitoring the sale so that no irregularities arise there."
