KUSHTIA, June 12: Exceptional growth of the tender jackfruit in orchards amid favourable climatic condition predicts bumper production of the fruit this season in the district, according to agro-officials, experts and farmers.
A silent revolution has taken place in jackfruit farming as hundreds of farmers have achieved self-reliance through farming of the most delicious, juicy and fleshy seasonal fruit in recent years everywhere in the district.
The farmers have engaged all-out efforts now in nursing the jackfruit trees in the orchards when formation of the tender fruits continues superbly after recent rainfalls as the harvest will begin from the next month.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, a total of 200 hectares of land brought under jackfruit cultivation this year with the target of 1000 metric tonnes. Of the target, 100 hectares of land were cultivated at Kumarkali upazila against the production target of 500 metric tonnes.
A jackfruit grower of Khoksa told the reporter, they are harvesting a bumper production of jackfruit because of favourable weather condition.
DAE officials said Kumarkali upazila is one of the leading jackfruit producing zones in the district, and the fruit is the main cash crop of the farmers here.
Sources said, at least 50 villages of Kushtia are known for jackfruit cultivation. During the visit to the areas, this correspondent talked to the farmers who harvested a bumper production as well as fetched handsome price this season.
Meanwhile, the bigger jackfruit traders or their representatives from different parts of the country have started flocking to the area and bargaining with orchard owners to purchase the fruit in advance like in the previous seasons.
"There are 300 jackfruit trees in my orchard. Each small tree produced Tk 1500 to 2000 jackfruits this year though the production rate was very high than last year. I am expecting to earn Tk 5 lakh from this orchard only, Md Jillu Miah of Kumarkali upazila said.
Youth Khairul Islam said that earlier he was unemployed, but now he has become a prominent businessperson by cultivating jackfruit in the five years.
"Jackfruit farming gains popularity consistently everywhere in the district now, albeit quality jackfruits were being produced, mainly in Jessore in the past," said Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Kinkon Chowdhury.
But, many farmers alleged that due to lack of proper marketing policy the middlemen or wholesalers are making extra profits depriving them of the fair price.
