Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said her government is striving for improvement of the living standard of the working class people and has set a better wage system so that none can change it in future.

"Everybody has to think that it's our country, so we have to take forward the country. The people will live better, as much as the country would achieve socioeconomic development. We want this," she said while receiving the report of the National Wages and Productivity Commission-2015.

Chairman of the Commission Nazrul Islam Khan handed over the report to the prime minister which proposes new wage structure for 60,000 workers in 91 industries of six sectors.

State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu, secretary of the ministry Mikhail Shipar, Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser, PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum, PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim and members of the 18-member wage commission were present.

The prime minister said one of the foremost goals of her government is to award a balanced wage structure for the working people to allow them living in a better economic condition. In view of this the government has decided to enhance their annual wage on the basis of inflation, she added.

However, wages of the workers must be linked to their productivity, she said adding without productivity and quality no industries can survive. Good workers should have good incentive to encourage the workers, she said.

The prime minister said Father of the Nation was always on the side of the exploited masses and he fought for their right. We are also following the footprint of Bangabandhu," she said adding that people enjoy the benefit of development when Awami League remains in power.

Sheikh Hasina said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman laid the foundation of industrial development in the region when he was a minister of the provincial government in 1954.

Bangabandhu had taken the initiative to set up Tejgaon industrial area and many other industries in the public sector, she said adding that the region had started witnessing some development when Awami League formed the government in 1956.

Pointing out the exploitation of the working class by Pakistani rulers, the prime minister said Bangladesh was liberated to get rid of that exploitation. After liberation, she said, Bangabandhu brought all industries under the state ownership as there was no capable industrialist to rebuild those.

Bangabandhu rebuilt the industries with much care and many industries were given to Freedom Fighters for their welfare. But the post 1975 governments sold out many profitable industries at a very nominal price without thinking the welfare of the workers of the industries, she said.

The prime minister said the Awami League government during 1996-2001 tenure handed over the ownership of nine sick industries to regenerate production and make them profitable. Whereas during the BNP regime as many as 17 workers were shot dead in the month of Ramadan as they waged movement for increasing their wages, she said.

Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh is progressing fast and country's economic growth reached 7.24 percent due to the pragmatic economic programmes of the present government.

The prime minister thanked the commission for submitting the report on time. She said the government would constitute a committee to find out ways of implementation of the report.

Chairman of the Wage Commission Nazrul Islam Khan said the report was prepared analysing the primary data collected from the workers. It proposes 16 scales for them.
