MEHERPUR, July 26:  The low-lying areas in Gangni upazila of the district have been submerged due to heavy rainfall for the last two days.
More than thousand people have become marooned and taken shelter beside roads.
People of eight villages under Sholotaka, Motmura and Shaharbati unions are badly affected. Meanwhile, their seedbeds and transplanted Aman paddy fields were also damaged.
The villagers alleged that due to closed sluice gates and unplanned digging of ponds for fish culture, rainwater could not drain out to the canals and fens.
While visiting the affected areas, it was found that Sholotaka village is under knee-deep water due to heavy down pour for the last two days. The villagers cannot even cook foods and are in trouble with their cattle-heads.
Member of Sholotaka union parishad (UP) Khaleda Khatun said, the water-logging has been created as the rain water could not drain out   into the nearby Chewtia River as influential people dug ponds on the water flowing path.
Sabud Member of Jorpukuria village said, "Our village is located on low-lying area to some extent and there is no arrangement to drain out the water. If the water could be drained to the Bhorat marsh, people of Hijolbaria and Dharmachaki villages could get rid from the water-logging problem. Due to digging of ponds for fish culture in the outlet of local Stuard canal, water could not drain out from the village and croplands."
On the other hand, Kuniar Canal has become silted up; so the water of Nowaal Ara fen at Khamarkhali village under Motmura UP could not drain, for which more than hundred families are marooned. Some families are found to take shelter beside Sindurkota Bazaar.
The only path for flowing water from Budu Gari, Nonar Beel and Munduli Beel to Mundail Canal is closed over construction of a sluice gate and so the water could not drain out. As a result, the sufferings of the people of Jugirghofa and Shohrabaria villages have increased to a great extent.
Gangni Upazila Agricultural Officer Roisuddin said, "The target has been fixed to cultivate transplanted Aman on 13,500 hectares of land during the ongoing season in the upazila. Meanwhile, only 3,000 ha could be cultivated. Almost all the seedbeds have been damaged. So the scarcity of seedlings has broken out. Besides, the vegetables and chilli fields have been damage too."
Upazila Project Implementation Officer Dilip Kumar said, "We have not yet received any list of the affected farmers caused by the heavy rainfall of Thursday and Friday. I asked the respective UP chairmen to submit the list of the affected farmers."
