Abdul Jabbar at ICU with double kidney failure

Veteran singer Abdul Jabbar has been admitted to ICU at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, Shahbagh in the capital. He was shifted to ICU on August 1 as his conditions deteriorated. It has been claimed by hospital officials that both of his kidneys have failed and that he needs to be treated abroad urgently. Abdul Jabbar has been receiving treatment for three months. He is now finding it hard to recognise people.
Babu Jabbar, son of Abdul Jabbar told Bangla Tribune that the family is not financially capable to bear the costs of treatment abroad. They are looking up to concerned authorities for help in this regard.
Abdul Jabbar became a lasting legend with his three vocal renditions "Tumi Ki Dekhecho Kobhu Jiboner Porajoy", "Salam Salam Hajar Salam" and "Joy Bangla Banglar Joy." The three songs made their way into list of top twenty popular Bangladeshi songs according to a survey conducted by BBC Bangla in March, 2006. The singer has won three top non-military accolades presented by the government- Bangabandhu Gold Medal in 1973, Ekushey Padak in 1980 and Independence Award in 1996.
Abdul Jabbar was born in 1938 in Kushtia. He started in the state redio of then Pakistan in 1958. In 1962 he sang his first film song and in 1964 he was featured in the first coloured film of Bangladesh- Zahir Raihan's "Sangam."
