SIRAJGANJ, Aug 9: The vermicompost is becoming popular among the local farmers as it increases soil fertility and production. As a result, the environment remains clean.
Meanwhile, the local agriculture department is advising farmers to increase production and use of this organic fertiliser.
In the meantime, the vermicompost is being made in Kamarkhand, Ullahpara, Kazipur, Chouhali and other upazilas of the district at farmer level and under the initiative of private organisations.
The people concerned have demanded creating market of this organic fertiliser under government patronage.
According to field sources, cow-dung which is collected from different cattle farms is amassed in one place and holes or rings are made in the soil. After three to four days, the dung and earthworms are put into the holes. These earthworms take dung and they excrete in the holes which is actually the organic fertiliser. In every 28 days, the fertiliser is produced.
The sources said, around 80 per cent of plant diseases are fungus-borne. A microbial 'trichoderma' in the vermicompost can destroy the fungus which cannot be destroyed with chemical. The fungus remains in the root of the plant and so the pesticides cannot destroy it. But, the microbial 'trichoderma' resides in the root of the plant and so it can destroy the fungus.
To cultivate one bigha of land, it requires 30 kg urea, 25 kg potash, 20 kg Triple-Super Phosphate (TSP), 15 kg gypsum, and two kg zinc fertilisers which are worth Tk 1,965 but in the same land 100 kg of vermicompost is required which is worth Tk 1,200.
There are more than hundred vermicompost producers in Kamarkhand upazila where they are producing around 75 tonnes of organic fertiliser from 1,800 rings.
A vermicompost producer Agriculturist Md Abul Kalam Azad of Shahbazpur village under Kamarkhand upazila said, "There are 1,860 species of earthworms in the world. We make vermicompost with 'eisenia fetida' and 'eisenia andrei' species of earthworms as these two species take more food and excrete more. As a result, the production increases to a great extent."
Farmer Rois Uddin of Rosulpur village under Kamarkhand upazila said, "Earlier I used different chemical fertilisers but after vermicompost was invented, I am using it. I have got much production at less cost."
A vermicompsost producer of Sonali Bangla Fertiliser A. Rahman said, "I was in abroad for long. As I did not get any job after my return to the country, I started producing vermicompost. Now, I am earning much."
A farmer A. Qader of Bhayarchar village under the same upazila said, "It is easy to produce vermicompost. If this fertiliser is applied in the field, it increases soil fertility."
Md Touhidur Rahman of Dabirganj under Ullahpara upazila said, "Though vermicompost is being produced much, its sale has increased comparatively. After loss in poultry farm, I stated producing vermicompost in 150 rings. Much propaganda is needed to spread its use among farmer level. Besides, the government should create its market otherwise there will be discouragement in its production."
Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Md Arshed Ali said, "There is no side effect in using vermicompost. Besides, the production in the lands increases much. We are encouraging farmers to use more organic fertilisers. Vermicompost was first invented in Canada. Currently, it is produced and marketed in 32 countries including Bangladesh."
