SIRAJGANJ, Aug 12: The picture of cow-fattening method has been changed in the district as the harmful side of artificial fattening methods was highlighted in media, and the administration monitored it strictly.
In the last couple of years, some unscrupulous farm owners reared cows using steroids and hormones centring Eid-ul-Azha.
This year also the cattle farmers are passing busy life in fattening cows ahead of Eid.
The cattle rearers said this time they are fattening cows with natural hygienic and scientific methods instead of artificial system according to the advice of the officials of concerned department.
Sources said nearly 1,15,000 cows are being fattened this year with natural methods in Ullapara, Belkuchi, Raiganj, and Kamarkhand upazila of the district for the sale before Eid.
Nearly 50 thousand oxen are being fatteneded in Shahzadpur upazila only for Eid. The varieties of cow include small-big Shindhi, Australian cross and Shahial.
The cow rearers hope that they will earn around 36 crore taka selling 45,000 cows outside the district after fulfilling local demand.
Farm owner Rafiqul Islam of Baghabari upazila said he fattened 40 cows for Eid-ul-Azha. He used straw, green grass, oil cake, wheat, gram, and boiled rice to feed the sacrificial animals, according to the advice of the Animal Resource officials.
He also said it is easy to fatten cows by following the natural methods. Besides, artificial method is harmful for cow's health.
The price of a cow is at least Tk 50,000, so the farm owners do not want to take risk by using chemicals to fatten the animals, he maintained.
Golam Rabbani, a resident of Kumordah village in Ullahpara upazila, said the farm owners are now conscious about chemicals as the Livestock Department gave suggestions to them in this regard.
'We also come to know the harmful aspects of using steroids and hormones in cow-fattening through media,' he also said.
Cattle trader Abbas Ali said he has been fattening five local cows for eight months. He reared three cows last year and had a good profit; so he is fattening two more cows this year.
He further said he is feeding vitamins and necessary medicines to the animals along with straw, green grass, oil cake, wheat, gram, and boiled rice.
Abbas Ali hoped  he will profit Tk 75,000 if the market remains in favour.
Abu Bepari of Brojobala village said the farm owners and the cattle traders used the harmful tablets as they were totally unaware of it; so many cows died, and they became helpless.
District Livestock Officer Mohammad Akhteruzzaman Bhuiyan said it is very risky to fatten cows using harmful tablets. The animals cannot take breath properly and fall sick.
'We have already completed our campaign about the harmful aspects of artificial fattening methods in every upazila; so the farmers are aware of it and do not follow the system,' he added.
At least 1,15,000 cows are being fattened this year in the district, he informed.
