People pay homage to naturalist Dwijen Sharma

People from all walks of life gathered the central Shaheed Minar here on Sunday to pay their last tribute to eminent botanist and writer Dwijen Sharma.
After body of the botanist was taken to the central Shaheed Minar from Bangla Academy, people from all strata of life, including different professional bodies and socio-cultural organisations, bade a farewell to Sharma by placing wreaths at his coffin from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed along with central leaders placed wreaths on behalf of the ruling Awami League.
Different socio-cultural organisations, including Communist Party of Bangladesh, Cultural Affairs Ministry, Central Public Library, National Museum, Liberation War Museum, Press Information Department, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Gosthi, Channel I, Shilpakala Academy, Oikya Nap, Kumudini Welfare Trust, Ranada Prasad Saha University, Bharateshwary Homes, Mohila Parishad, Gano Sanghati Anodolon, Bangladesh Chattra Union, Bangladesh Chattra Federation, Sammillito Nagorik Andolon, College-University Teachers' Association, Asiatic Society, Bird Club, Kendriyo Khelaghor Asar, Russia Alumnae Association, Dhaka Bengal Foundation and Prokriti Foundation placed wreaths at his coffin.
After placing wreaths, Dr Hayat Mahmud said Dr Dwijen Sharma has done works for the people as well as nature.
'The death of Dr Dwijen Sharma was an irreparable loss for the nation. He had dedicated his life for nature and the people," said Mukit Majumder, chairman of Prokriti Foundation.
Earlier, his body was taken to Bangla Academy at 10:30 am where people from different professions, including officials and employees of Bangla Academy, showed their last respect by placing wreaths till 11:30 am.    BSS
