A Khulna court on Monday sentenced two persons to ten years imprisonment each in a case filed over killing Dr Rakib Khan in 2020.
Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Md Nazrul Islam Hawlader passed the verdict. The court also fined Tk 5,000 each of the convicts, in default, have to serve an additional six months in jail.
The convicts are –Md Zamir Ali Sheikh and Abdul Kuddus. The court acquitted other three accused—Khadiza Begum, Md Golam Mustafa, and Nur Nahar Begum-- as charges brought against them could not be proved.
According to prosecution documents, on June 15, 2020, Dr Abdur Rakib Khan, director of Raisa Clinic and Diagnostic Centre in Khulna, was injured during a scuffle with a patient's relatives at his private clinic.
On June 16, he succumbed to his injuries while being treated at Shaheed Sheikh Abu Naser Specialised Hospital in Khulna.
On June 14 night, 2020, a pregnant woman died after giving birth to a baby at the clinic, leading her relatives to bring up allegations of wrong treatment and later on to the scuffle.
Dr Rakib's younger brother Saiful Islam filed a case against four of the patient's relatives and 8-10 anonymous others with Khulna Sadar police station on June 17, 2020.
After examining the evidences, witnesses and documents, the judge passed the verdict on Monday.
