Candidates in most seats in Ctg div served notices for flouting code

CHATTOGRAM, Dec 26: The Election Commission (EC) concerned returning officers and judicial election investigation committees served show cause notices to candidates in most of the constituencies in Chattogram division for uninterrupted violation of electoral code of conduct.

Local EC offices received over 50 complaints of code of conduct violation in 16 constituencies in Chattogram division.

Hearing the complaints is in progress, and in some of cases, the accused have been summoned to personally appear to explain their conduct.

Complaints and counter-complaints piled up against AL nominees and the independent candidates.

The Election Commission has filed complaints in court against sitting MP of Chattogram Mustafizur Rahman Chowdhury ands AL nominee in Ctg-16 constituency, accusing them of violating the election code of conduct by assaulting journalists.

Banshkhali Election Officer Harun Mollah on Tuesday lodged the complaints in the court of Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Dev.

The court ordered the accused to appear before it by January 3, said Public Prosecutor Sheikh Iftekhar Saimul.

The EC on Monday decided to take legal action against the Awami League candidate in Chattogram-16 for entering into altercation with journalists on November 30.

When Mustafizur Rahman, accompanied by 15 ruling party leaders and activists, came to the returning officers office to submit nomination, a reporter asked him why he brought 15 supporters flouting the rules that permit not bringing more than five supporters.

Enraged by the question the MP held out death threats and threw the reporter to the ground, according to Abdus Salam, deputy secretary of the ECs legal department.

Some journalists suffered minor injuries, and cameras and tripods of several TV channels were damaged in the incident.
The election inquiry committee asked  Mustafizur Rahman to explain his conduct.

The committee came to the conclusion that Mustafizur Rahman had violated the electoral code.

In Ctg-1 (Mirsarai), Mahbubur Rahman Ruhel is contesting as AL nominee against independent candidate Muhammad Giasuddin, a local AL leader and former upazila Chairman who is contesting with the symbol Eagle. Both the candidates filed complaints and counter-complaints against each other.

In Ctg-2 (Fatikchari), Khadizatul Anwar Sony is contesting as AL nominee against independent candidate Hussain M Abu Tayyib, also a local AL leader and former upazila Chairman. Both the candidates filed complaints against each other for continuous violation of electoral code of conduct.

In Ctg-3 (Sandwip), Mahfuzur Rahman Mita of AL and M Jamaluddin Chowdhury, leader of SACHIP, a rebel AL candidate in the contest as independent candidate with the symbol Eagle  complained  against each other on the charge of flouting the electoral code of conduct.

In, Ctg-4 (Sitakunda), S M Al Mamun is contesting as AL nominee against six rebel candidates of AL, in the run as independent candidates.

In Ctg-5 (Hathazari), Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud nominee of Jatiya Party (JP)  a ruling  alliance partner is contesting against ALs rebel candidate Shahjahan Chowdhury who is contesting with the symbol Ketle Trinamool BNPs  Nazimuddin.

ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury is contesting in Ctg-6 (Raozan) as AL nominee against five independent candidates including Shafiul Azam.

In Ctg-7 (Rangunia), Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud Chowdhury is in the run as AL nominee against six candidates including  ALs rebels and other political parties.

In Ctg-8 (Boalkhali-Chandgaon),  Solaiman Alam Sheth of JP will face independent candidate Abdus Salam Treasurer of the city unit of AL and former Chairman of Chattogram Development Authority (CDA).

Ctg-9 (Kotwali-Bakalia), Deputy Education Minister Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Naufel will face seven other candidates.

In Ctg-10 (Double Mooring-Pahartali), Mohiuddin Bacchu is in the election race as AL nominee against  former Chatogram Mayor Manjur Alam and Farid Mahmud of City AL unit, besides seven other  contestants. All of them lodged complaints against each other for violation of the code of conduct.

In Ctg-11 (Port-Patenga), M A Latif is contesting as AL nominee against City AL unit leader Ziaul Huq Suman and councillor of Chattogram City Corporation  who is contesting as an independent candidate. They all lodged complaints against each other for code violation.

In Ctg-12 (Patiya), AL candidate Motaherul Islam Chowdhury will face ALs sitting MP Whip Shamsul Huq Chowdhury who is contesting as an independent candidate. Both of them have lodged complaints against each other for violation of conduct.

Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed is contesting in Ctg-13 (Anwara) as the AL nominee against seven other candidates.
 
In Ctg-14 (Satkania-Chandanaish) Nazrul Islam Chowdhury of AL will face rebel AL candidate M Abdul Jabbaer Chowdhury, ad former upazila Chairman.

In Ctg-15 (Satkania-Lohagara), ALs sitting MP Abu Reza M Nezamuddin Nadavi will face  ALs rebel candidate M A Motaled, President of upazila Awami League and former upazila Chairman.

Contest in Ctg-16 (Banshkhali), is expected  between AL nominee Mustafizur Rahman and rebel candidate Mujibur Rahman Treasurer of Chattogram district AL unit. There are eight more contestants in this seat.
