Agora boss Niaz Rahim gets bail

A court in Dhaka granted bail to the chairman of superstore chain Agora, Niaz Rahim, on Thursday hours after he was jailed in two cases filed for selling adulterated food.

Niaz was granted the bail after he filed two petitions seeking bail in the cases, and following the bail order, he got-rid of custody.

Pure Food Court's Special Magistrate Mehedi Pavel Sweet passed the bail order with condition that he will appeal against the conviction and sentence within one month.

On Thursday, another magistrate of the court sentenced one-year jail to Niaz each in the cases.

The court also fined the chairman Tk 50,000.

The management of Agora is now, however, controlled by private equity fund Brummer and Partners Asset Management Bangladesh Ltd.

A group director of Rahimafrooz, Rahim also serves as the chairman of several concerns of the business group.

The lawsuits were filed in 2008 and both of them involved adulterated ghee brought from the superstore,” Sobhani, who presides the Pure Food Court.
