Stillbirth at Rajshahi hospital due to negligence

Nazmul Hasan Togor, father of the stillborn, said his wife Julia Begum was admitted to the hospital around 12:00am Monday with labour pain. She was kept under observation of doctor Abeda Begum.

The doctor set time 6:00am for performing cesarean section on the woman, but Abeda did not turn up to the hospital on the day. Around nine hours after the scheduled time, Julia was operated upon by another doctor around 3:00pm, and she gave birth to a stillborn baby.

Nazmul alleged that the fetus died in the womb due to delayed operation.

Abeda’s assistant Sabina said the doctor went to Kusthtia in that night being informed of her mother-in-law’s death. However, she informed the authority of the matter around 8:00am, Sabina added.

The hospital authorities did not arrange another doctor to conduct operation in time in absence of doctor Abeda, Julia's uncle Emon Sheikh alleged, adding that the fetus died due to the authority's negligence.

Contacted, the hospital Director Mamunur Rashid declined to talk but termed the death as an accident.

Relatives of the victim mother besieged the room of the hospital director around 11:00am.

Being informed, police rushed in and brought the situation under control, said Shah Makhdum Police Station officer in-charge Zillur Rahman.
