Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of Rajshahi city unit staged demonstration at Rajshahi on Friday, protesting at the verdict in Zia orphanage trust graft case.
Police and witnesses said, BNP leaders and activists gathered around the city BNP office after Zumaa prayer.
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advisor Mizanur Rahman Minu, Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) mayor and city unit BNP president Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, general secretary Shafiqul Haque Milon, Rajshahi divisional BNP’s co-organizing secretary Shahin Sawkat addressed the party men during the demonstration.
Police stopped them as they tried to ping out a protest procession.
City BNP president Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul declared protest processions at every ward of the city on Saturday.
Rajshahi city Juba Dal leaders gathered in the Bhubanmohan Park area from Friday morning in protest against the imprisonment of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and others.
The party leaders and activists gave speeches and chanted slogans denouncing the trial. Police cordoned off them.
City Juba Dal president Abul Kalam Azad Sweet, general secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, Rajshahi district Juba Dal president Mosaddek Jamani Sumon, general secretary Shafiqul Alam Somapto addressed the pief rally.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP)’s official spokesman Senior Assistant Commissioner Ifte Khayer Alam said that police was on highest alert during the programmes of BNP and Juba Dal. To avert any untoward situation, no permission was given to ping out any protest procession, but they (BNP) were allowed to demonstrate in front of the office.
Meanwhile, Puthia Upazila AL, Rajshahi city unit Bangladesh Chhatra Leageu (BCL) leaders and activists pought out a joyous procession on Friday following the verdict.
