Farmers of Durgapur Upazilla of Rajshahi staged demonstration brandishing spades in front of the upazila land office on Sunday protesting against shrinking of arable land in the area.

At least 150 farmers who were the victims of unplanned pond digging in Angra Beel of Sridharpur staged the protest from 10am to 1pm.

Peasants Nazrul Islam, Shariful Islam, Abdul Aziz and others said a group of influential people had been digging ponds one after another for three years in Angra Beel. Due to the digging of the ponds, 1000 bighas of crop land has gone under water.

They alleged the farmers did not get response after complaining to the Upazilla Land Office about the matter.

Union Awami League president Abdul Gafur, general secretary Ahsan Habib and member Rabiul Islam Rabi said the farmers have been pursuing the land office for a long time to save their cropland.

At around 1pm, Upazilla Assistant Commissioner (Land) Samar Kumar Pal, assured the farmers of immediate action in this regard, and then the farmers left the place.
