2 killed in train crash

Two pedestrians, including a beggar were killed in a train accident in Puthia upazila of Rajshahi on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred at the Belpukur Rail Gate on Dhaka Rajshahi Highway while the pedestrian was trying to save the beggar.

The deceased were identified as Korban Mondol, 75, a resident of Jamira village of Belpukur Union, and Shamsul Alam, 60, a resident of Talatpur village of Charghat Upazilla of Rajshahi. Shamsul was a beggar.

Quoting eyewitnesses, Belpukur police station officer-in-charge Kabirul Islam said Shamsul was crossing the rail line through the rail gate. At this time, Korban tried to save Shamsul from an onrushing train, but the train hit both of them.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies, he also said.

After the accident, local people blocked the road for half an hour. The situation is under control now, the OC added.
