Maize cultivation is on rise in Rajshahi

Maize cultivation has been gradually rising in Rajshahi district due to huge demand for the cash crop and good profit spending a less money.

Farmers and agronomists said, apart from preparing various foods, maize is also widely used as poultry, dairy and fish feed.

Maize cultivation is increasing in Kharif-1 season, usually in Rajshahi region. Officials concerned informed that after the cultivation of potato, the field does not require any more fertilizer for maize cultivation except one or two irrigation that also lowers the production cost.

Farmers can get 20 and 25 maunds of yield from each bigha land spending Tk 4,000-5,000. Presently, per maund of maize is being sold at Tk 700-800.

Anwar Hossain in Naohata Duari area, said he has cultivated maize on five bighas of land this season. He is hopeful of getting a good harvest if the weather remains favourable.

Finding it profitable, many people in his area are getting involved in maize cultivation maize this season, he added.

Paba upazila agriculture officer AKM Manjur Molla said, “In the current season, some 3,500 hectares here have been brought under maize
cultivation while farmers already cultivated in 2,000 hectares.

He expressed hope that cultivation is likely to be exceeded.
