Students and teachers of Rajshahi University (RU) brought out a mourning procession on the campus on Sunday, demanding justice for Prof Rezaul Karim Siddique, an English department teacher of RU who was killed in 2016.
Law enforcing agencies allegedly could not arrest the 'mastermind' of the murder in two years whereas the verdict will be pronounced on 8 May.
The procession started from the Shahidullah arts building of the university at 10am and ended in front of Mukul's Protest and Solidarity Platform.
Rizwana Hasin Shatovi, daughter of professor Rezaul Karim, said, “We have respect for the court. I cannot comment more until the verdict is given. I hope the court will give an exemplary punishment to the accused. After the pronouncement of the verdict, it will be understood how fair trial it was.”
During this time hundreds of students including AFM Maswood Akhter, chairman of English department, associate professors of the department Abdullah Al Mamun, Md Mominul Islam, Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain, lecturer Ridita Mizan were present.
Prof Rezaul Siddiqi was stabbed to death when he was waiting to catch a university bus at Shalbagan in Rajshahi city in the morning of April 23, 2016.
On November 6, 2016, police pressed charges against eight in the case, more than six months after the killing.
The accused are Khairul Alam Badal, Osman, Nazrul Islam, Shariful Islam, Ripon, Abdus Sattar, Rahmatullah and Maskawath.
Of them, Badal, Nazrul and Osman were killed in gunfights with police at different times and Shariful has been on the run.
